News: Driver hurt in rollover crash on US-30 near Mt. Vernon

LINN COUNTY, IA -- A 42-year-old Cedar Rapids man was hospitalized late Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle rollover accident on U.S. Highway 30 near Mt. Vernon, reports the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

The collision occurred on the westbound lanes east of Knapp Road shortly after 11:00 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was driving a GMC Yukon westbound on the highway when the vehicle veered off the road toward the left inside shoulder. As the driver attempted to overcorrect while getting back on the roadway, the vehicle started to fishtail.

Authorities said the car rolled over multiple times before coming to rest on its wheels in the center median.

First responders arrived to find the victim seat-belted and alone in the vehicle with its airbags deployed. He was removed from the wreckage and transported to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries.

The patient has since been charged with "Failure to Maintain Control and Driving While License Under Suspension."
