News: Driver killed in crash with semi on I-80 near Durant

CEDAR COUNTY, IA -- A 71-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle collision that injured two others on Interstate 80 near Durant, according to 1630 KCJJ.

The fatal accident occurred on the westbound interstate between the exits to the Wilton and Durant shortly after 9:15 a.m.

An early investigation by the Iowa State Patrol shows a 65-year-old Chicago resident was driving a semi westbound when the truck ran off the roadway, crashed through the cable barrier, and veered past the median. The semi entered the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with an oncoming 2020 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The driver of the the pickup, a Cedar Rapids resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the semi and the pickup's passenger, a 71-year-old woman, were transported to Davenport's Genesis East medical center with undisclosed injuries.

Authorities noted all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

No further details have been released as of this writing, but an investigation was underway.
