DES MOINES, IA -- A 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after an attempted carjacking led to a crash outside a south Des Moines gas station, according to WHO Des Moines.
The incident took place at the Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh on Southeast 14th Street, in the city's South Park neighborhood, at around 7:00 p.m.
Des Moines Police said the suspect beat up a driver before trying to steal a Chevy Malibu from the parking lot of the station.
At one point during the carjacking, the car reversed into a support beam, severely damaging the entire back end of the Malibu. The beam's brick facade also sustained significant damage, but it appeared to retain its structural integrity.
Responding officers took the suspect, a Bondurant resident, into custody and transported him to Polk County Jail. He currently faces multiple charges, including first-degree robbery, possession of a weapon by a felon, and other traffic charges.
The carjacking victim suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
No further details have been released at this time.
