DES MOINES, IA -- Three people were injured Tuesday evening when their vehicle crashed and went over the side of George Washington Carver Bridge near downtown Des Moines, according to WHO 13 Des Moines.
The accident occurred on a stretch of West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, near Fleur Drive, shortly before 5:00 p.m.
Authorities said an SUV was traveling westbound on the road when its driver lost control. The vehicle ran against the guardrail before it fell over and down the side of the bridge, landing at rest just a short distance from the Raccoon River.
Three occupants were rescued from the wreck, including an unconscious woman who had to be extricated. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. At this time, no details have been disclosed on their condition, but authorities said all were expected to survive.
The westbound lanes of West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway near the river bridge was expected to remain shut down until around 8:30 p.m. to accommodate an investigation.
