News: DUI suspect crashes car into tree in SW Iowa City

JOHNSON COUNTY, IA -- A 22-year-old University of Iowa student crashed his car into a tree Tuesday night outside a grocery store in southwest Iowa City, according to 1630 KCJJ.

The collision occurred near an Aldi store on Ruppert Road, in the city's Roosevelt neighborhood, shortly after 6:45 p.m.

Authorities said the young driver alleged he had consumed mushrooms before crashing his 2012 Toyota Avalon into a tree.

Officers arrested the suspect after recovering a pipe with evidence of marijuana at the scene. He now faces charges of Operating While Intoxicated and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
