News: Driver in fatal crash near Magnolia Park faces new charges

DES MOINES, IA - The driver arrested for a fatal crash near SW 8th St and Emma Ave on Nov. 23 faces new charges, according to WHO 13.

Officers attempted to pull over a 46-year-old man for fraudulent plates around 1:38 a.m. The driver refused to stop, leading police on a short chase before crashing into a ditch near Emma Ave.

Rescue crews transported the man's 66-year-old female passenger to an area hospital, where she died.

Authorities initially charged the driver with homicide by vehicle-eluding, possession of a controlled substance, driving while license suspended, fraudulent use of registration, and no insurance.

He has now been additionally charged with homicide by vehicle-OWI after a blood test showed the presence of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and amphetamines in his system.

The driver is held at the Polk County Jail.
