News: Officials provide more details on Keokuk County hay ride crash

KEOKUK COUNTY, IA - Officials have released additional information concerning a hay ride crash near What Cheer that sent three kids to the hospital on October 3, according to KCCI.

A man was driving a pickup truck pulling a trailer for a hay ride carrying 29 seventh-grade children as part of a non-school-sponsored event when he crashed into a ditch around 9 p.m.

The crash threw all the kids off the trailer. Rescue crews transported three children to an area hospital.

Investigators believe the cell phones of the driver and his passenger would reveal additional information about whether or not they were drinking and conspiring to mislead investigators about what caused the crash.

The driver left the scene before emergency crews arrived. His passenger, who was a Keokuk County deputy at the time, was impaired when law enforcement arrived. The passenger has since resigned.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
