News: Semi-truck driver strikes, kills tow truck driver in Urbandale

URBANDALE, IA - An allegedly impaired semi-truck driver fatally collided with a tow truck driver on I-80 near 86th St on Sunday, according to WHO 13.

A 54-year-old man was driving a semi-truck west on I-80 when he struck a 45-year-old tow truck driver who was towing another vehicle around 10:10 p.m.

Following the crash, the semi-truck driver did not stop. Officers with the Clive Police Department pulled the semi-truck driver over.

Officers smelled alcohol coming from the semi-truck driver and determined he was impaired after he failed a field sobriety test and a breath test.

Authorities booked the semi-truck driver in the Polk County Jail. They charged him with homicide by vehicle-OWI, failure to change lane upon approach to emergency stationary vehicles-death, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

The semi-truck driver's bond was set at $500,000.
